was winning among independent voters by 13 points. in 2008, he defeated john mccain by 8% of independents. let's see where polls settle. i will be looking at the independent numbers. the other thing about barack obama's election, he won 43% of the white vote. in most of the national polls, that is where he is. look, the country is changing. in 2008, three-quarters of the electorate was white, down from the mid to high-80's. that number is going to change. in a close election -- i do not think anybody thought it would be a seven-point race. the metrics are there for him to win. >> to me, the most stunning numbers from 2008 -- if you take out 18-29-year-old and look just at 30 plus, mccain and obama tied. that shows you how important the youth vote is to the president. that is why you see air force one showing up near -- at airports near major universities. they recognize that fact. john mccain beat barack obama 55-43 among white voters. george w. bush, in 2000, beat al gore among white voters 55- 43. the margin was the same. how did gore and bush is essentially tied? you might not know this, bu

't adequate to be president, it makes me question john mccain's judgment. are they above the bar where there's no real quality difference? >> i think there's an open question about ryan. he can be glib and telegenic that comes across as competent where palin didn't have that skill. we can't say l about. j was the last time a vice president made -- palin in 2008 is a dramatic one. estimates that it was one, 1.5 points is what she cost john mccain for being on the ticket. which is huge. think back to dan quayle. i've never seen a more dramatic contrast between the competence of the two vice presidential candidates, lloyd benson, this old testament authority and dan quayle and benson delivered that devastating line. michael dukakis lost the election but the race tightened towards the end. there was a lot of considerat n consideration -- >> let me ask one last question here on this particular issue. is this going to be more fun for joe biden than 2008 was because sarah palin was someone that he had to pull punches against both because she was a woman, but also because it would not have looked g

that after the election you tilly get some kind of agreement sni? i was speaking to john mccain and he said don't expect noticing happen. you seem to think something can happen. why? >> i wake up pretty much every day and i update my probabilities on how likely that we'll go off the cliff. and i think that we won't. it's unmachblgable that this country as partisan as things are that policymakers wouldn't be able to come to some kind of an agreement to avoid knowingly letting things happen that will put us straight into recession. that is too high a price to pay for the inability to compromise and work this out. so the consequences of going off the cliff is that we would have very significant spending cuts and tax increases. things we need to do, but if not done smartly don't fix the problem. so there is so much reason not to have dumb policies kick in that would hamp harm the economt the policies have to start working together and they have to put together a package that won't fix the entire problem in that so-called lame duck session, but instead put in place a down payment. some amount of
